  34. Abstract
  35.
  36. This document  defines  an   MIB   for   monitoring   Directory   System
  37. Agents[DSA],  a  component  of the OSI Directory.   The  DSAmib  will be
  38. used  in  conjunction  with  the application-mib for monitoring DSAs.

  61. 1.The Network Management Framework.
  62. ==================================
  63.
  64. The Internet Network Management framework  is  laid  out  in  the
  65. three documents-
  66.
  67.         STD 16/ RFC 1155 [1]   defines the generic structure of
  68.                                network management information
  69.         STD 15/ RFC 1157 [2]   defines the protocol for accessing
  70.                                network management information
  71.         STD 17/ RFC 1213 [3]   defines the primary set of managed
  72.                                objects.
  73.
  74. The framework is adaptable/extensible by defining newer  MIBs   to  suit
  75. the requirements of specific applications/protocols/situations.
  76.
  77.
  78. 2.Model of the management information base for a DSA  Manager.
  79. ==============================================================
  80.
  81. A DSA-manager[application] may wish to monitor  several  aspects of  the
  82. the  operational  DSA.  It may want to know the process related aspects-
  83. the CPU, memory, .. utilization of the operational  DSA;   the   network
  84. service  related  aspects - inbound-associations, outbound-associations,
  85. operational status, ... and finally the information specific to the  DSA
  86. application- its operations and performance.
  87.
  88. The MIB proposed in this document covers only  the   portion   which  is
  89. specific   to  the  DSA-application. The network service related part of
  90. the MIB, and the host-resources related part, of the  MIB  ,   as   well
  91. other   parts  of  interest to a Manager monitoring the DSA-application,
  92. are covered in separate  documents  [6][7].  The  relationship  of  this
  93. MIB  with  the  other  MIBs  (existing  and  potential)  is shown in the
  94. following diagram.

  137. the  Host-resources-mib to obtain process related information [ resource
  138. usage,..] the network service  application  mib provides the information

  148. ==================================
  149.
  150. The Directory System Agent [DSA], a component of the  OSI-Directory,  is
  151. an  application process. It provides access to the Directory Information
  152. Base  [DIB]  to  Directory  User  Agents  [DUA]   and/or   other   DSAs.
  153. Functionally , a User [ DUA ] and the Directory are bound together for a
  154. period of time at an access point to the Directory [DSA]. A DSA may  use
  155. information  stored  in  its  local database or interact with (chain the
  156. request to) other DSAs to service requirements. Alternatively, a DSA may
  157. return a reference to another DSA.
  158.
  159. The local database of a DSA consists of the part  of  the  DIT  that  is
  160. masered  by the DSA, the part of the DIT for which it keeps slave copies
  161. and cached information that is gathered during the operation of the DSA.
  162.
  163. The specific operations carried out by the  DSA  are  :  Read,  Compare,
  164. AddEntry,  ModifyEntry,  ModifyRDN,  RemoveEntry, List, Search. There is

  176.
  177. 4. MIB design.
  178. =============
  179.
  180. The basic principle has been to keep the MIB as simple as  possible. The
  181. Managed  objects  included  in  the MIB are divided into two tables- the
  182. dsaTable and dsaInfoTable.
  183.
  184.    - The dsaTable  provides  summary data on the accesses, operations
  185.      errors and cache performance
  186.
  187.    - The dsaInfoTable  provides some useful information on the
  188.      performance of other DSAs with which the monitored DSA  interacts.
  189.
  190. There   are  references   to   the    Directory   itself   for    static
  191. information  pertaining  to the DSA. These references are in the form of
  192. "Directory Distinguished Name"  of  the  corresponding  object.  It   is
  193. intended  that  DSA management applications will use these references to
  194. obtain  further  related information on the objects of interest.
  195.
